![]() ![]() ![]() I won every essay-writing competition in my elementary and was always sent to different contests and quiz bees that tested my reading and comprehension skills. I could say that my English back then was quite “okay” given that I am from a barrio. As early as six, I knew how to use the dictionary and find words I could use for my autobiography and essays about my first friend and Christmas and summer vacations. The following year, my father bought me an English dictionary. Going back, the first story I read in grade 1 was, “Henny Penny” a European folktale and “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” an English poem. I did not know what and how it happened, but I was promoted to the next grade level. ![]() Nevertheless, I did all the works and successfully passed the level. Two to three would be unofficial enrollees like me because I personally would like to go to school already. The teachers would only teach 15-20 pupils at a maximum. All were neighbors even if they lived five fields away from one another for as long as they belong to the same barangay. That was how barrio schools work then because everyone knew each other. I was sent to grade 1 as a “saling-pusa” because I was just five then. ![]()
